The Cole Camp varsity boys’ basketball team defeated the Stover Bulldogs 63-54 in a conference game Tuesday, January 26, at Stover.
The Bluebirds went up on the Bulldogs 23-14 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Stover managed to shave two points off the Bluebirds’ lead but still trailed 39-32 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs cut into Cole Camp’s lead, outscoring them 17-15 in the quarter, but were still behind 54-49 at the close of the quarter. In the final period, both teams could not find the basket, but Cole Camp outscored Stover nine to five to come away with the conference victory.
Tyler Wilson scored a game-high 19 points, followed closely by Thatcher Wehmeyer with 18 points. Wilson pulled down 10 rebounds, and Jordan Haag had 5. Wilson led the team in assists with 3 and steals with 2.
“Cole Camp is a big and aggressive team, and we had a difficult time reversing the ball on offense due to their size,” explained the coach. “Cole Camp hurt us on the offensive boards and forced way too many turnovers. Our players played hard and hung with the Bluebirds, but we just could not get enough stops on defense to keep the game close enough to win. Our boys have to contain the lane and give up fewer offensive rebounds to have a chance to beat good teams like Cole Camp.” |

The Stover varsity boys basketball team defeated the Smithton Tigers 75-64 at their Homecoming game Friday night, January 29.
The Bulldogs trailed at the end of the first quarter 21-15. Stover could not close the gap in the second quarter, falling behind 41-33 at the half time break.
The Bulldogs came out in the third quarter and picked up their defensive intensity, holding the Tigers to just nine points while scoring 17 to tie the game 50-50 at the end of the period.
Stover kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points (including 11 of 14 free throws) to Smithton’s 14, to come away with the Homecoming and conference victory. The Bulldogs are now 4-2 in the conference with one remaining conference game left at Northwest.
Tyler Wilson was the game’s high scorer with 32 points. Thatcher Wehmeyer had 14 points, Chris LeClair 13 points, Landon Rymer 9 points, and Justin Rasa 7 points.
Landon Rymer was the leading rebounder with 11 rebounds. Wilson had 6 rebounds, and Rasa, LeClair, and Jordan Haag had 4 each. Wilson dished out 6 assists while Rasa had 4. Wilson accumulated 8 steals, Rasa 5, and Haag 2.
“We got behind in the first half because of the great three-point shooting of Smithton, who went seven of nine from the three-point arc. We adjusted our defense in the second half, holding them to just one three-point shot and 23 total points,” noted Coach Hensley. “We also did a better job on the boards, giving up only seven offensive rebounds. Our ball handling improved as well, turning the ball over only nine times against their pressure defense.”
“It was good to have three players in double figures and some much needed production from our inside players,” continued the coach. “I was very proud of the team and the way they fought back and did not give up after the difficult and trying first half. They have faced a lot of adversity these past couple of weeks, and tonight they showed me what they are made of.” |
